  • Electromagnetic brakes: Using them guarantees motion control, locking the mechanism in a position in a way that it becomes tamper-proof; in other words, it cannot be manually forced into changing its position.
  • Encoders: Using them makes it easier to implement safety features and a safe and efficient machine operation. Encoders for operational safety provide information about the position, angle and revolutions, which especially focuses on mechanical and electrical safety. They transform the information from one format to another with the purpose of standardizing, adjusting the speed, or for safety control.
  • Printed circuit boards that cut the power in case of overvoltage, thereby preventing fires from starting.

 

Trends that improve cash dispenser and ATM safety

ATM and cash dispenser attacks are rising every year across the globe. 2016 has seen the most ATM attacks – only in Europe the figure has increased by 30% in relation to previous years. This is shocking information that leads us to the question ‘why so many acts of vandalism?’. The answer is quite simple: due to the shift the financial sector undergoing towards the digital realm. New risks have emerged; risks that are being studied daily by the manufacturers of these devices with the purpose of minimising or even eradicating them.

 

When speaking of attacks we can find two groups. On the one hand, there is the most obvious and classic version, the physical attack, which affects the integrity of the ATM, possibly causing significant damage to the infrastructure where it is located. And on the other hand, we find a series of attacks that are becoming the most concerning method nowadays: logical attacks.

 

When referring to physical attacks, in regard to protection, the focus is on improving the materials with which cash dispensers are manufactured, using hardened materials and fireproof plastics that ensure a quick fire extinction. On the other hand, logical attacks use external electronic devices or malwares, which demand a greater protection.
