Intralogistics is undergoing a rapid transformation: increasingly automated warehouses, mobile robots, sorting systems and conveyor lines that never stop. Behind each of those movements there is a critical and often invisible component: the gearmotor. In this guide we review where gearmotors are used in intralogistics, what is required of them and how to choose the most suitable one for each application.
The role of the gearmotor in intralogistics
Every time something is conveyed, sorted, lifted or positioned inside a warehouse, a controlled movement is needed. The gearmotor is what converts the motor's energy into the exact torque and speed that the mechanism needs. In an environment where availability and pace are everything, the reliability of that component directly affects the productivity of the whole installation.
Main applications of gearmotors in intralogistics
Belt and roller conveyors
They are the backbone of any warehouse. Gearmotors drive the belts and rollers that move goods between stations, with demands for smooth starting, constant torque and continuous operation.
Sorting systems (sorters)
Automatic sorters divert each parcel to its destination at high speed. They require precise, fast-responding gearmotors capable of withstanding very frequent start-stop cycles.
AGVs and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs)
Automated guided vehicles and mobile robots depend on compact and efficient gearmotors for both traction and steering. Here space and energy consumption are critical, because they determine the equipment's autonomy.
Automated warehouses and stacker cranes
Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) need precise movements in height and depth, with gearmotors that combine high torque and reliable positioning.
Lifting and positioning
Lifts, transfer tables and positioning mechanisms require precise torque control and, often, holding the load safely, which points towards solutions with the right reduction ratio and performance.
What intralogistics demands from a gearmotor
Intensive cycles and reliability
The warehouse never rests: many machines work long shifts or run continuously. The gearmotor must be sized for that duty cycle and offer a matching service life, because an unexpected stop holds up the whole chain.
Compactness and torque density
Space inside an AGV or a compact machine is gold. The aim is maximum torque in minimum volume, without giving up efficiency.
Energy efficiency
In battery-powered equipment, every point of efficiency translates into more autonomy. In fixed installations, into lower consumption throughout the year.
Quietness and control
Modern warehouses, sometimes close to work areas or offices, increasingly value quiet operation and smooth running that reduces wear on the whole assembly.
Which type of gearmotor to choose for each application
There is no single answer, but there is a starting logic:
- Where compactness, precision and silence take precedence (typical in AGVs and positioning), planetary gearmotors are usually the best choice because of their torque density.
- When high torque and robustness are needed for heavy conveyors or stacker cranes, the IGS Series range is a better fit.
- For light conveyors and versatile applications, the MTS Series offers a good balance.
- And when the geometry of the equipment forces a change in the orientation of the movement, 90º Solutions solve the integration problem.
If you want to look more closely at how to weigh up all these variables together, we explain it in our guide “How to choose a gearmotor” and in our comparison of types of gearmotors.
The advantage of a custom solution in intralogistics
Intralogistics machines are rarely identical: dimensions, loads, cycles and integration constraints vary. When a standard range does not fully fit, a custom solution designed around the equipment avoids compromising the machine's design and is usually more efficient throughout its service life. Having a manufacturer that supports you from analysis through to series production reduces risk and speeds up lead times.
Frequently asked questions
Which gearmotor is best for an AGV?
Usually a compact and efficient one with high torque density, such as a planetary gearmotor or the IGS Series. In an AGV, space and consumption are critical, and those are precisely its strengths.
How does the duty cycle affect the choice?
It is decisive. Equipment in continuous use requires different sizing and materials from equipment in intermittent use. Defining the cycle properly avoids both falling short and oversizing.
Standard or custom for intralogistics?
It depends on the constraints. If the catalogue meets the space, torque and operating conditions, the standard option is faster and more economical. If several constraints come together, the custom solution ends up being the most efficient option.
