Gearmotors for the automotive industry: applications, requirements and keys to selection
Mirrors, seats, suspension and actuators: what the automotive industry demands from a gearmotor and how to get the choice right for series production.
The modern car is full of small movements we take for granted: a mirror that folds, a seat that adjusts, a suspension that adapts to the road. Behind many of them there is a gearmotor working silently. In a sector as demanding as the automotive industry, choosing that component well is not a minor detail: it determines the reliability, comfort and safety of the vehicle. In this guide we review where they are used, what is required of them and how to get the choice right.
Why the automotive industry is such a demanding sector
Few environments are as tough on a component as a vehicle. An automotive gearmotor has to work reliably for years and withstand constant vibration, extreme temperature ranges and millions of cycles, all with limited weight and size and at a competitive cost for series production. Meeting all of that at the same time is what sets an automotive solution apart from any ordinary industrial one.
Main applications of gearmotors in the automotive industry
Rear-view mirror folding and adjustment
It is one of the most widespread applications: a compact gearmotor folds and unfolds the mirror, or adjusts its orientation. It requires precision, quietness and enormous durability, because it is operated thousands of times over the life of the vehicle.
Seat adjustment and comfort
Seat, headrest and lumbar support adjustment systems rely on gearmotors that combine enough torque to move the load with smooth and quiet operation, which is key to the perceived quality of the cabin.
Suspension and vehicle dynamics systems
Some adjustable suspension solutions make it possible to change the behaviour of the vehicle. Here the gearmotor must offer precise control and a reliable response in demanding mechanical conditions.
Actuators and auxiliary mechanisms
Covers, air-conditioning flaps, locking systems and other small vehicle actuators rely on compact gearmotors that efficiently handle specific movements.
What the automotive industry demands from a gearmotor
Durability and fatigue resistance
The component must withstand millions of cycles without degrading. Materials are selected and sized with the whole service life of the vehicle in mind, not occasional use.
Resistance to temperature and vibration
From intense cold to the heat of the engine, including the continuous vibration of driving: the gearmotor has to maintain its performance across that whole range without play or failures.
Compactness and lightness
Every gram and every millimetre counts. The aim is maximum performance in minimum space and weight, because it affects consumption and integration into assemblies that are already tight.
Quietness and smooth running
Inside the vehicle, noise is synonymous with low quality. Quiet operation and smooth running are requirements, not luxuries.
Standard or custom: the automotive approach
The automotive industry is, by nature, a field of custom solutions. Each manufacturer, each model and each mechanism has its own constraints of space, torque, mounting and behaviour. That is why the usual approach is to design the gearmotor around the specific problem, validate it with prototypes and then take it to series production. The choice of gearbox type —compact parallel shaft, medium torque with the MTS Series, or specific solutions such as Powerfold for mirror folding— is the starting point on which that solution is built.
If you want to understand how all the technical variables come together, we explain it in the guide “How to choose a gearmotor” and in the comparison of types of gearmotors.
CLR's real-world experience in the automotive industry
This level of demand is not theoretical. At CLR we have developed, for example, the mirror folding solution used in vehicles from manufacturers such as Audi, Volkswagen, Ford, Nissan and General Motors, as well as a variable suspension system that allows the stiffness of the shock absorbers to be adjusted in Audi RS models. These are examples of how a well-designed drive solution solves a specific requirement at production scale.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't just any industrial gearmotor do for the automotive industry?
Because the sector adds demands that general industrial use rarely imposes all at once: millions of cycles, extreme ranges of temperature and vibration, quietness, low weight and series cost. The component is specifically designed and validated for that environment.
Can they be manufactured in large volumes?
Yes. The usual process involves designing the solution, validating it with prototypes and taking it to series production with ongoing support, which is exactly what an automotive manufacturer needs.
What information is needed to develop an automotive solution?
The movement to be achieved, the torque and speed range, the available space and mountings, the operating conditions (temperature, vibration, cycles) and the expected volume. With that data, the custom design can begin.
