The traction challenge in intralogistics 4.0: Keys to optimizing AGVs and AMRs

The success of these fleets does not rely solely on their navigation intelligence, but on their mechanical reliability

Warehouse automation using Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) is no longer a trend, but has consolidated itself as an operational necessity. However, the success of these fleets does not rely solely on their navigation intelligence, but on their mechanical reliability.

For design engineers, the challenge is threefold: maximize power, reduce space, and guarantee 24/7 autonomy.

The balance between power and space

In the design of an AMR, every millimeter counts. Today's robots must be low enough to slide under racks, yet powerful enough to move payloads of several hundred kilograms. It is here that the choice of drive topology becomes a critical factor.

The planetary gearmotor, by definition, is the most geometrically efficient solution for these cases. Thanks to its architecture of planet gears orbiting around a central sun gear, it distributes the load across multiple simultaneous contact points. This translates into a torque density far superior to that of parallel shaft or worm gearboxes, within a remarkably smaller diameter.

This compactness allows the drive system to be integrated directly into the vehicle's chassis or even inside the drive wheel (wheel drive) itself, freeing up usable space for batteries or payload.

Closed-loop control: the foundation of precision

Autonomous navigation relies on precise data. A robot that must dock at a charging station, position itself under a pallet, or stop to the millimeter in front of a rack cannot afford drift or overshoot. Therefore, the integration of a high-resolution encoder is non-negotiable.

This component allows the control system to monitor the angular position and speed of each wheel in real time, instantly correcting deviations and ensuring smooth and safe movement in environments shared with human operators. The result: repeatable positioning with millimetric tolerances, cycle after cycle.

The CLR solution: the CLR600 gearmotor for mobile robotics

Within the CLR IGS series, the CLR600 model has established itself as a benchmark for manufacturers seeking proven reliability in traction applications. This compact gearmotor combines the robustness of a high-performance planetary gearbox with the versatility required for low-profile chassis.

Optimized for 24 V systems, the CLR600 supports the integration of magnetic or optical encoders, facilitating total control over the robot's movement. It is the key component for those who require proven mechanics that compromise neither battery autonomy nor available payload space.

Thermal efficiency and operational autonomy

One of the most common issues in intralogistics is motor overheating during intensive duty cycles. An inefficient system dissipates energy in the form of heat, which not only shortens the component's lifespan but also prematurely drains the robot's battery and forces more frequent charging stops.

Therefore, the optimization of internal friction within the gearmotor is vital. The use of high-quality materials, precision bearings, and industrial-grade lubricants allows for maximized electromechanical performance, extending the operational intervals between charges and significantly reducing maintenance costs throughout the equipment's lifecycle.

The most important aspect of a logistics robot is its engineering

The engineering of a logistics robot is, in essence, a precision puzzle. By prioritizing components that offer high torque density, extreme compactness, and closed-loop control capabilities, manufacturers secure a competitive advantage in an increasingly demanding market.
